Semen sample collection and analysis
The first step in evaluating male fertility in assisted reproduction
The evaluation of male fertility is an essential part of infertility diagnostics and begins with a semen analysis — a laboratory examination of a semen sample.
Since ejaculate quality can vary significantly even in the same patient at different times, at least two tests are required, spaced at least six weeks apart. This provides a more accurate and representative assessment of the semen parameters.
When is a semen sample provided?
- During diagnostics – as part of the initial fertility assessment (Step I).
- On the day of egg retrieval – to be used in the actual in vitro fertilization procedure (Step III).
- If necessary, the sample can be collected in advance and preserved through freezing.
Methods of sample collection:
- Masturbation – the most commonly used and preferred method.
- Coitus interruptus – possible, but less commonly used.
- Surgical sperm retrieval – in cases of absence of sperm in the ejaculate.
- Electroejaculation – for certain medical indications.
The clinic provides a specially equipped room for semen collection, where patients can feel as comfortable as possible.
Recommendations for a quality sample:
- Abstinence from sexual activity for 2 to 5 days before sample collection.
- Use of a sterile and non-toxic container provided by the clinic.
- If the sample is produced at home, it must be delivered to the clinic within 30 minutes after ejaculation.
- Although it is recommended to provide the sample on-site, in cases of discomfort or psychological stress, collecting it at home is an acceptable alternative.
