BABINDEN – A CELEBRATION OF WOMEN AND MEDICINE

Babinden, celebrated every year on January 21st, is one of the most beloved folk holidays in Bulgaria, connected with ancient traditions, care for women, and respect for medicine. Although the holiday has undergone changes over time, it remains a symbol of love, recognition, and gratitude towards the women who help expectant mothers at the most important moment in their lives — the birth of a child.

HISTORY OF THE HOLIDAY

The roots of Babinden go back to ancient times when Bulgarians believed there were special women called “babi” (grandmothers or midwives) responsible for childbirth. These women, usually older and experienced, were believed to possess unique knowledge on how to assist women during labor. They not only provided physical help but also performed rituals and spells to ensure the safety of the mother and child. Over time, the holiday also became associated with medicine, as a tribute to the professionals working in this field.

THE ESSENCE OF THE HOLIDAY

The main idea of Babinden is to honor the women involved in childbirth — the babi, midwives, obstetricians-gynecologists, and all who assist mothers and newborns. On this day, various customs and rituals take place, including expressions of thanks and gifts. Traditionally, a group of women gathers to perform the ritual of “watering the baba” or midwife. She is sprinkled with water or participates in a special ceremonial rite as a sign of respect for her work and efforts. Afterwards, the baba is gifted clothes (shirts, socks, etc.). In return, the baba also gives clothes to the children born under her care and ties a red and white thread with a silver coin on their wrist.

There are many other customs, but the most important thing is that the celebration is always filled with much laughter and joy.

THE ROLE OF THE BABI AND MIDWIVES

The babi and midwives are central figures of the holiday. They symbolize female strength, knowledge, and experience passed on to younger generations. In the past, these women not only helped during childbirth but also played an important role in the social structure of the community. Often, in small villages, the babi were the only ones able to assist with births, as doctors and hospitals were lacking in remote areas.

THE HOLIDAY TODAY

Today, Babinden is more of a celebration for midwives and gynecologists rather than the traditional babi. With the advancement of medicine and healthcare, the role of babi in childbirth has diminished, but the holiday continues to be celebrated with respect for healthcare professionals. Although customs and rituals have changed, the essence of the holiday remains the same — to pay tribute to the women and medical specialists who help bring new life into the world.

Babinden is a holiday that not only combines traditions and customs but also highlights the importance of the female role in society and healthcare. It is an occasion to express gratitude to all those who, with care and attention, help new generations come into this world, while also showing respect for the ancient knowledge and practices that have led to the development of modern medicine.
